  Following is a list of the five families recognized by American entomologists, beginning with the most primitive and ending with the most specialized: (1) Hesperiidæ, (2) Papilionidæ, (3) Lycænidæ, (4) Lemoniidæ, (5) Nymphalidæ. In the last three families, which comprise the majority of butterflies, the first pair of legs is more or less. Evans, W.H. There is in the North American Fauna a large Hesperid standing in our literature under the name of epigona Herrich.

  Abstract. The names of all the species of butterflies described by Linnaeus under “Papilio” are researched. Of the names treated, (c. 80%) are currently valid as specific () or subspecific (2), 29 are junior synonyms, 14 are invalid (one of these applying to a fake), and for 13 the identity is unknown or by: immature stages of the skipper butterflies (lepidoptera: hesperiidae) of the united states; biology, morphology, and descriptions by marc c. minno a dissertation presented to the graduate school of the university of florida in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of doctor of philosophy university of florida page 2.
